The grass is getting greener and my hydrangeas are showing some life! I love it when everything starts blooming at the beginning signs of spring and it makes me get the itch to start overhauling my patio for the season. Tuesday Morning is one of my favorite places to get budget-friendly decor to do this and they have so many amazing finds right now.

I recently went to some of my favorite stores (before the lockdown!) and wanted to share all my amazing budget-friendly spring patio updates I made to our backyard.

So here is a little guide for you on how to prepare your patio for the spring season. There are little things to prep before you decorate.

Budget-Friendly Patio Updates to Get Your Backyard Ready for Spring:

1. Pull all your existing cushions off and hose them down.

This is important to do to maintain the longevity of your cushions. Plus who wants to sit on dirty cushions! I think using the hose or a power washer is the easiest and then leave them in the sun to air dry.

2. Hose off all your furniture and give it a good scrub down

Keep that power washer or hose out and while you are at it hose down your furniture too. Layers of dirt and grime can build up through the winter season and this will help your furniture look as good as new.

3. Clean up the BBQ and get it ready for grilling season

I bet your BBQ also has been neglected and maybe you didn’t even cover it during the winter season. Here is my favorite way (and super easy!) to get that BBQ cleaned up in no time.

4. Clean out planters

You may have dead winter plants left in your planters that now need to be cleaned out. Or maybe it is time to look at the planters you have in the garage and see if you need some new ones for the season. Grab a hose and sponge to clean out the ones you want to keep.

5. Power wash patio

Don’t forget to powerwash that patio too! Not only do the floor but the ceiling and around the beams will need it too. You will be amazed at the difference it will look like when you are done.

Top Items to Buy for Affordable Updates for Your Patio for Spring:

1. Outdoor throw pillows

Select outdoor throw pillows to add color and pattern to your patio. I love mixing and matching here and you can follow my guide on how to select throw pillows to come up with the perfect combo.

I found these fun throw pillows with split fabric and tassels from Tuesday Morning as my starting point. Then layered them with these denim colored pillows and white outdoor pillows. They are so vibrant and a fun pop of color for the spring season.

2. Outdoor cushions

I wanted to add that same denim color to our outdoor seating area as well. These matching chair cushions from Tuesday Morning as well as these gorgeous rich navy pillows tie in the color variations from our seating area beautifully. I love the white contrast piping and they are super soft and comfortable on your back.

3. Pots and planters

Typically I buy new planters each season. I love shopping at some of my favorite inexpensive stores like At Home or Homegoods because they make it affordable for me to do this. I like to stock up on modern white ones and this year even grabbed these gorgeous terra cotta ones for my tables. The terra cotta ones come in 3 different sizes and I may need to go back and get the smallest one for our bar cart because they are so cute!

4. Flower for planters

I grabbed an assortment of fresh new perennials for all my new planters to add even more color and vibrancy to our patio. I love mixing different varieties to come up with unique arrangements. If you need help, your local garden center will be happy to help you select a beautiful combination.

5. New area rug

This is another great way to add color, pattern and delineate seating areas from the rest of your patio. These generally are made from polypropylene and easy to hose off and keep clean. I like to make sure it is big enough for all the front legs of my seating to be on it. So generally a 5×7 or 8×10 are good sizes.

6. Outdoor candles

Using outdoor candles will keep the bugs away so I like to have a lot of them on hand. I like to get ones that have citronella in them. I love to have them on all my tables and even using beautiful lanterns like these ones I found to house them.

Get creative when displaying them and use fun patterned plates, bowls, and lanterns for your candles.

How to Enjoy Your Spring Patio Updates:

1. Family smores night

Even if you don’t have a fireplace like ours you can get one of those tabletop fire pits to do this. The kids will love it and I know you will too! Grab some smores sticks or have the kids go forage for some branches and enjoy the gooey goodness of those toasted marshmallows.

2. Movie night

If you have a tv on your patio, turn on a great family movie and sit back and relax with some cozy blankets for some quality family time. if you don’t have a tv then use a projector and a sheet hung on your fence and throw some blankets on the lawn for an even more fun movie-going night.

4. Planting party with friends

I mean how fun does this sound?!! Order some cute small planters that you can gather together and use for your planting party. Grab some outdoor games to play on the back patio table or lawn games. They get everyone involved and are such a great way to have some quality family time.

6. Read a good book

Okay, I personally love this one so much. Grab a good book and sit out on your back patio and listen to nature as you read. This is such a great stress reliever and is so good for your mind.

    1. There’s so much to do and now I have all the time to accomplish most everything. Your back patio is beautiful. I love the brick! Is that painted or the natural color of the brick? I’ve been trying to decide whether to paint my fireplace inside my house so your brick caught my eye. If I have to stay home much longer I’m going to have to try it. Happy Spring!
