Do you ever think about what key elements can make or break a room design? It is something I talk to my clients about each time we sit down for a initial interview and they are shocked almost every time when I say this. . . . Did you know that your windows are one of the most important pieces in a room design? Most people think it is the main furniture pieces. Well, today I’ve partnered with The Home Depot to tell you to not overlook this key component in your rooms and I am going to help you solve the mystery of what to do with them.

5 Easy Ways to Transform Your Windows:

1. Blinds

So first let me answer the question of what are blinds because some people get them confused with shades. Blinds are made up of several long slats that are held together by a cord. You can filter the blinds by turning the wand. This adjusts the amount of light let into the room. Blinds can come in many materials like aluminum or wood. The slates of materials can also come in many different sizes. I tend to love a chunkier look. To me it looks more custom. I love at The Home Depot’s selection of blinds and they can completely custom the look of these for you.

2. Operable Shades

Operal shades are window treatments that are in 1 piece rather than slates like the blinds and operate on a cord. These come in roller shades, roman shades, solar shades, sheer shades and bamboo shades just to start with. There are SO many options. For instance when selecting natural woven shades, you can choose from bamboo, a natural woven wood, different kinds of reeds or even driftwood. They are made custom to your window sizes so it is okay if your window sizes vary. I love layering shades like this with non-operable side panels to dress it up even a bit more.

Valances and decorative window panels are one of the easiest ways to instantly dress up your windows. I love all the styles and fabrics The Home Depot has to offer. You can select from grommets, pinch pleats and tab panels for a more custom look. If you are looking to add some pattern to your room, then this is where to do it. I love drapes to have a 1/8″ puddle on the floor and to be hung at least 16-18″ above the top of the window. You will add height to a space the higher you hang the drape, so don’t be afraid to go even higher than the 16-18″ if the ceiling allows.

4. Interior Shutters

I love this look especially for a beach cottage and this is such a great way to add value to your home. These shutters are a beautiful quality way to add privacy and solar control to a room in a more decorative solution. You can select white or a more natural wood color depending on the space. They are easy to care for and can reduce heating and air conditioning costs. They also help reduce noise from the outside. Shutters are definitely one of my favorite window treatments!

5. Outdoor Shades

If you have a outdoor space like a patio or balcony that gets a lot of direct sun during the peak times you use the space, then you should consider outdoor shades. These shades are not only beautiful but so functional! You can still see right through them but they just soften and filter the light. These shades are able to withstand moisture, mold, mildew and harsh sunlight making your outdoor space much more relaxing to enjoy.

I truly believe windows should be dressed and really can make or break a room. I love that The Home Depot has so many options to choose from and you can custom your window treatments to your window specs. Are you ready to give your windows a little facelift??!
