I wanted to kick off February and bring back our “How to Decorate With” series with How to Decorate With Red. Back in the day when I was in design school, they taught us that red was a very powerful color. It could make people hungry and fuels determination and strength. It is a very intense color for sure. We also were told the primary place to use red was in a kitchen or dining room. But over the years I have seen it used as a beautiful complimentary accent in a room, to showcase a front door and to be a seasonal pop of color in all rooms. If you are a lover of red and not sure how to use it in your home then follow our guide below and check out our favorite red shades in paint.

How To Select The Perfect Red Paint Color:
- A shade will look different from one room to the next due to lighting
- Always paint a 4×4 swatch on the wall to see if it will work
- Always paint 2-3 coats at least for a realistic swatch on the wall
- Pop the trim in a white for a dramatic effect
- Use accessories in the same shade to give your wall color some depth

Red doors are a traditional Feng Shui preference to attract good fortune. Very appealing!
I love red very much… And it is very pretty also…
That blue and red combination is very awesome…
I love red. While others may do layers of textured white, I do red on red on red. I do understand that my children will probably never allow the colour in their homes, but when given a choice, I will still choose red!
I love it and you have to go with what you love to look at!
I LOVE reds, pinks and purples. The rooms shown were a delight to the eye. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Red is a go-to for many, but for the more cautious, this is a great primer!
Thank you for highlighting red, my favorite color for a punch!
Your photos of rooms using red are wonderful. I have loved the neutral pallet that so many people have used for the last few years, but I think the pendulum is swinging to get back to dramatic color accents.
I recently painted the pine, reproduction farm table that I use for casual dining. My plan was to paint it black, but have a base of Chinese red that would show through in the distressed areas. I can’t tell you how hard it was to complete my plan with the black top coat– it looked spectacular red! Maybe next time around I’ll have the courage to leave it that color!
I always enjoy your posts, thank you so much
That sounds like it is going to be beautiful! Thanks so much for being a loyal reader!!
