My Favorite Fall Pillows

Well Fall is in full swing and I will be posting my Fall Home Tour next week. In the mean time I thought I would share a easy and inexpensive way to add some Fall touches into your home. I am a major pillow hoarder if you have not heard. My guest room closet is stocked to the brim. BUT I am obsessing over some of the fabulous pillows out there and had to share how I would style them in some Fall pattern mixes.

  • Start every pillow arrangement with a patterned anchor pillow, then layer in a solid, and finish with a fun accent piece.
  • Buffalo check, geometric prints, and sweater-knit textures are consistently strong choices for fall styling.
  • Orange and turquoise is a bold combo that works surprisingly well in neutral rooms.
  • Typography pillows (think “Thankful” or harvest phrases) add personality without going over the top.
  • Mixing fabric textures like burlap, natural fiber, and chunky knit gives a pillow grouping visual depth.
  • You do not need to spend a lot. A few well-chosen pieces from budget-friendly retailers can pull a whole room together.

I love to first start with a patterned pillow. It can either be a monochromatic color scheme or one with multi colors in it. Then I like to add in a solid pillow to ground the patterned one. Last a fun Fall pop accent pillow!

I love this combo for a modern twist. I think orange and turquoise is a bold color combo and I love popping this in a otherwise neutral room for a wow factor.

Buffalo Check Pillow | Sweater Pillow | Burlap Pillow

This combo of pillows for my farmstyle lovin’ fans! The buffalo check is SO popular this year and I love a little texture to the mix with the burlap and sweater fabric.

Geometric Pillow | Orange Pillow | Thankful Pillow

This is my personal favorite. I am a sucker for a great geometric print and I love that typography pillow. I think this is subtle with just a small pop of orange.

  • Not all “fall” pillows need pumpkins on them. Texture and color alone can signal the season without obvious holiday graphics.
  • Pillow insert quality matters as much as the cover. A cheap insert makes even a beautiful cover look flat and sad. Look for down-alternative inserts sized one inch larger than the cover for a full, fluffy look.
  • If you are working with a tight budget, focus your spending on one good patterned pillow and fill in with solid covers, which are almost always less expensive.
  • Mixing textures is more important than matching colors exactly. A burlap pillow next to a velvet one creates visual interest even if the hues are slightly off.
  • Pillow covers (rather than pillows with sewn-in inserts) are the smarter long-term buy. You can swap covers by season while reusing the same inserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many throw pillows should I put on a sofa?
For a standard three-cushion sofa, three to five pillows is typically the sweet spot. Arrange them asymmetrically for a relaxed, lived-in look, or use matching pairs for a more formal and balanced style.

What colors are most popular for fall home decor pillows in 2026?
Burnt orange, warm rust, deep burgundy, and earthy taupes are dominating fall palettes this year. Terracotta, muted gold, and olive green also pair well with natural textures like jute and linen for a cozy seasonal look.

Can I mix different pillow sizes in one arrangement?
Yes, mixing sizes is actually encouraged because it adds visual interest and dimension. Start with a larger square in the back, add a medium pillow in front, and finish with a lumbar pillow to create a layered arrangement.

Are pillow covers or pillow sets a better value?
Pillow covers are almost always the better long-term investment because you reuse the inserts year after year. They also take up less storage space and make it easy to switch your decor for different seasons.

How do I keep throw pillows looking full and not flat?
The most effective trick is buying inserts one to two inches larger than the cover’s stated size. For example, use a 20-inch insert inside an 18-inch cover to create a fuller, plumper appearance.

So which one is your favorite and what color combos are you crushing on this Fall??
